It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book Terrible Things Can Happen To You!, is the just right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry—and that Flora will be changed too, as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart.
If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll know I’m working my way through the Newbery Winners. Kate DiCamillo is a two time winner, with this title and also The Tale of Despereaux, which is next on my Newbery list.
Flora & Ulysses is a wacky story of a young girl who doesn’t usually hope for much, in fact her mantra in life is, “Do not Hope; instead, observe.”
This made for quite the challenge, living with her mom, a romance novelist, who was more fond of her living room lamp than her own daughter. The mother and daughter had very little in common, especially since her parents divorced and when Flora meets Ulysses, things only get worse.
But cynic or not, Flora finds out their are things worth believing in, and hoping for! I don’t want to give too much away, but Flora’s friend Ulysses is a very unique squirrel, which made for a fun and silly read!
This was a quick little chapter book with lots of adorable illustrations. I enjoyed reading this one while camping, being surrounded by squirrels, just none quite as talented as Ulysses!
Have you read this or Tale of Despereaux? Do you have a favorite Kate DiCamillo title? I’d love to hear your thoughts…
