Muskrat 💗 Love

We went for our evening walk around the lagoon and we heard something right near the bushes scurry into the water. Then this muskrat came right at us, swimming pretty fast.

Our thought is that this is possibly the mother coming to protect her babies. At first we weren’t sure what we saw so we did a bit of research… here’s a few muskrat fun facts:

  • Muskrats have webbed hind legs, are semi-aquatic and can hold their breathe for up to 20 minutes.
  • Adults weigh up to 4 lbs.
  • Mothers can have up to 3 litters a year with usually 4-8 pups.
  • They are nocturnal.
  • Muskrats are one of the most trapped animals in history, for their pelts.

  1. They are cool photos, but we’ve had some in our back yard that make this fella look miniature. Not a fan after seeing one up close that we caught in a Have-a-Heart trap…our furry dude had some
    gnarly fangs 😬

  2. Your photos are terrific! Of course, now I have the song in my head, where it will stay for days. LOL! Muskrat Susie… and Muskrat Sam…. why do I know all of the words to this song!? Thanks for sharing your beautiful world with us!

    • Lol it’s funny… I’d never heard that song before, but by our campfire that night my parents were talking about it so we pulled it up online and played it. Your the only person that’s mentioned the reference to the song! 😁❤️
