We went for our evening walk around the lagoon and we heard something right near the bushes scurry into the water. Then this muskrat came right at us, swimming pretty fast.
Our thought is that this is possibly the mother coming to protect her babies. At first we weren’t sure what we saw so we did a bit of research… here’s a few muskrat fun facts:
- Muskrats have webbed hind legs, are semi-aquatic and can hold their breathe for up to 20 minutes.
- Adults weigh up to 4 lbs.
- Mothers can have up to 3 litters a year with usually 4-8 pups.
- They are nocturnal.
- Muskrats are one of the most trapped animals in history, for their pelts.
Thanks for checking out our lagoon muskrat! We sure had fun watching him! So adorable! 💗🐾
